Kathmandu. KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has confirmed the names of 509 places within its 10 wards.
Chief of KMC Department of Heritage and Tourism, Kumari Rai, said the study carried out by the Department of Heritage and Tourism in collaboration with the Integrated Urban Development Centre (UDC) had determined 430 original names and 79 auxiliary names.
Likewise, an agreement was reached to study the original and ancient names of eight more wards in the third phase. Chief of Department of Heritage and Tourism Kumari Rai and Executive Director of Integrated Urban Development Center Riza Joshi signed the agreement on the third phase study in the presence of Acting Chief Sunita Dangol, Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain and Heritage and Tourism Committee Coordinator Asha Man Sangat. The study will be carried out in the study of the original names of settlements and places of ward 12, 13, 15, 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28.
On the occasion, acting chief Dangol said that the name is not just a word used for calling. “There is a fact behind every name. It is a story of history, culture, civilization and society. Therefore, naming and using them should not be taken lightly,” she said, raising the issue of keeping the identity board related to the name. Keep it in the same place as possible. Otherwise, keep it in a place that does not blink your eyes, does not affect others. ”
The study was conducted in wards 5, 6, 7, 18 and 24 in the first phase and in ward 8, 17, 19, 20 and 25 in the second phase, Rai said. According to her, the study and documentation was carried out on the original and ancient naming of the places and settlements based on religious, cultural and historical importance in the ward.
In course of the study, the ancient names are discovered by studying the settlements, settlements, temples, shrines, bahal, wahi, dhara, sattal and boards of religious, cultural and historical importance. The names are confirmed by the locals, the community, the cultural experts, archaeologists, linguists and historians.
