House of Representatives election: 6500 candidates in fray today

Kathmandu. Voting is taking place today under the election to the House of Representatives being held under special circumstances after the Jenji movement. The voting is taking place in a single phase from 7 am to 5 pm in all 77 districts of the country.

This is the third election to the House of Representatives after the country entered the federal democratic republic. Earlier, the elections were held in 2074 and 2079 BS.

The first-past-the-post election system is taking place for 165 constituencies and 110 constituencies under the proportional representation system.

A total of 65 political parties are vying for 61 election symbols under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) category. A total of 3,406 candidates including 3,017 male, 388 female and one other are contesting in the first-past-the-post election. A total of 3,135 candidates including 1,363 male and 1,772 female are contesting under the PR system.

A total of 1,8903,689 voters including 9,633,358 male, 9,240,131 female and 200 others are eligible to cast their votes in the election. Likewise, 186,142 provisional voters have been enlisted, according to the Election Commission. A total of 23,112 polling stations have been set up at 10,967 polling stations across the country. Similarly, 143 temporary polling stations have been fixed. According to the Election Commission, senior citizens, people with disabilities, people with disabilities and pregnant women will be given priority for easy voting.

A total of 79,727 Nepal Army, 75,797 Nepal Police, 34,567 Armed Police Force, 1,921 National Investigation Police personnel and 149,090 Election Police personnel have been deployed for election security. A total of 215,000 employees are working for the election. A total of 42,22,51,200 ballot papers under the first-past-the-post (FPTP) and proportional representation (PR) category have been printed and sent to the respective polling centres.

Four international organizations and 39 national organizations are monitoring the elections. President Ram Chandra Poudel, Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Prime Minister Sushila Karki and Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari have already appealed to the voters to enthusiastically participate in the election process.
