Four hundred huts to be removed to remove canal encroachment

Rautahat. Around four hundred huts built by encroaching on canals under the Bagmati Irrigation Project in Rautahat are to be removed. Issuing a seven-day public notice on April 26, the project urged the locals living on both sides of the canal to remove the structures.

Locals of Chandrapur Municipality-5 and 6 of Rautahat have been living encroaching on the canal land for the past 28 years.TAG_OPEN_div_26 Project Chief of Bagmati Irrigation Project Karmaiya, Santosh Chaudhary, said that preparations are being made to remove the encroached structures by force.

A team comprising Mayor of Chandrapur Municipality Sanjay Kumar Kafle, Chief District Officer of Rautahat, Dinesh Sagar Bhusal and representatives of security agencies will carry out on-site monitoring and remove the encroachments within a few days.TAG_OPEN_div_24 According to Chaudhary, around three hundred to four hundred houses will be removed. According to him, the step has been taken as part of the campaign to protect public land, prepare digital records, strengthen the surveillance system and remove illegal occupation as per the directives of the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation and the government’s hundred-point agenda on governance reforms.

Project Chief Chaudhary said, “The campaign to stop new encroachments and remove old illegal structures has started as per the government’s policy.”TAG_OPEN_div_22 Out of which 65 meters in the east and 60 meters in the west side of the canal have to be cleared. ”

Ganesh TAG_OPEN_div_18 Poudel, a member of the House of Representatives from Rautahat constituency-4, said the decision was taken for the management of canals and expansion of irrigation. He said that the management of Bagmati Irrigation Project should be prioritized as it is the national pride project.

Stating that a plan has been forwarded to expand the irrigation area by bringing additional water from the Sunkoshi-Marin Diversion Multipurpose Project, he pointed out the need of identifying the genuine landless people living in the canal area and managing them.TAG_OPEN_div_16

Meanwhile, the locals living in the canal area have drawn the attention of the municipality to identify the genuine squatters and make proper management.TAG_OPEN_div_14
