Kathmandu. The United Nations has issued a new global proposal to evaluate the development of countries in a more inclusive, balanced and sustainable way. The proposal aims to incorporate people’s living standard, social condition, equality and environmental protection along with Gross Domestic Product (GDP) as the important bases of development.
The report titled “Measuring Progress for Man and the Planet” was released by the independent high-level expert group led by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Along with economic growth, human welfare, social justice and environmental sustainability have been given equal importance.
Guterres said that while GDP is an important indicator of economic progress, it does not fully reflect the whole state of society. According to him, issues such as inequality, poverty, health, education, peace and environmental protection should be included in the evaluation in a respectful manner.
According to UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock, the proposed index board includes 31 indicators, which are expected to present a broad and balanced picture of the economic, social and environmental situation. It also incorporates society’s ability to cope with disasters and crises.
Nora Lustig, co-chair of the expert group, said gross domestic product (GDP) does not adequately capture vulnerabilities such as inequality, poverty and environmental damage. Another co-chair Kaushik Basu said development means not only economic growth but also positive improvement in education, health, art, culture and people’s living standards.
According to the United Nations, GDP has long been used as a major basis for policymaking. But relying solely on it could affect the environment, safety and quality of life even if the economy grows.
The report is expected to help governments formulate effective policies prioritizing inclusive development, sustainability and well-being. The report also pointed out the need to see development not limited only to economic achievement but also linked it to the quality of human life and conservation of nature.
