Devotees throng Budhanilkantha temple today

Kathmandu. Followers of the Vedic Sanatan religion are offering Tulsi leaves in their respective monasteries today.

Every year on the day of Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi, Tulsi leaves are kept in every house. This day is also known as Nirjala Ekadashi. The seeds sown on this day are sown a month later on the day of Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi i.e. Harishayani Ekadashi.

This year, Tulsi is not to be planted on Jyeshtha Shukla Ekadashi due to Adhikmas, so Tulsi leaves are being planted today on the day of Jyeshtha Ekadashi.

Tulsi is worshiped from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi. It also means that Tulsi will be raised and married to Damodar. These four months are also known as Chaturmas.

There is a religious belief that bathing, worshiping and donating during Chaturmas fulfills one’s wishes. Religious scholar and former member of Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, Prof Dr Devmani Bhattarai, said that there is a scriptural saying that fasting on this day without drinking water will yield desired results.

He also said that those who can fast without drinking water can eat fruits for those who cannot. Tulsi, which is also considered a beneficial medicine in Ayurvedic, is also used in the treatment of various diseases. Modern science has also proved that there is a lot of oxygen in Tulsi.
