Another leap forward in university education reform: implementation of National Academic Calendar

Kathmandu. The National Academic Calendar developed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) has been developed and implemented to systematize the educational activities of higher education.

The Commission has implemented the National Academic Calendar in coordination with the universities in order to integrate the academic activities of the universities and make them calendar-based.

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Education and Sports through a ministerial-level decision on Tuesday approved the National Academic Calendar for Higher Education, 2080 BS with timely revisions and a new national academic calendar. The ministry has also decided to issue a circular to all universities through the University Grants Commission (UGC) for necessary implementation.

The Commission believes that there will be a big stride in the reform of university education with the implementation of the integrated national academic calendar. Point No. 87 of the government’s hundred-day agenda on governance reforms had set a target to publish the results of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations to be conducted from universities as per the calendar provided by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The Ministry of Education and Sports has implemented it through the University Grants Commission.

The calendar will be implemented as per clauses (d), (e) and (f) of sub-section (1) of Section 6 of the University Grants Commission Act, 2050. In addition, the necessary subjects will be included as per the Essential Services Operation Act, 2014 and the university will be directed for implementation through the necessary implementation commission.

Deputy Director of the Commission, Ramesh Prasad Adhikari, said that with the implementation of the revised national academic calendar, admissions, teaching, examinations, results publication and other educational activities in the universities would be conducted as per the schedule.

Earlier, the academic calendar prepared by the PSC was approved by the ministerial-level decision of September 29, 2080 BS and came into operation. The Commission had formed the Academic Calendar Revision Committee to make improvements in line with the changing educational needs and time.

The proposal was sent to the Ministry for approval after making necessary amendments in the calendar based on the decision and recommendation of the committee on May 25, 2083.
