Kathmandu. Electronic payments are on the rise in Nepal, especially after the coronavirus pandemic. Lately, it has gained a lot of momentum.
Digital payments such as e-wallets, mobile banking, internet banking, QR codes, etc. are increasing.
In recent years, transactions through e-commerce and Point of Sale (PoS) have also increased significantly. According to a study conducted by Nepal Rastra Bank, the use of fast payment systems such as QR payments, e-wallets and mobile banking has expanded rapidly after Corona.
Compared to 2023/24, the number of transactions through the faster payment system increased by 34.6 percent and the transaction amount increased by 33.7 percent in 2024/25.
During this period, the number of transactions through QR has increased by 92.5 percent and the transaction amount by 91.8 percent.
Payments through debit and credit cards have not increased much.
In 2024/25, the number of transactions through prepaid cards increased by 40.7 percent and the transaction amount increased by 66.5 percent compared to the previous fiscal year.
Online card payments are also expanding rapidly. In 2024/25, the number of online card transactions increased by 39.9 percent and the transaction volume increased by 53.5 percent.
Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is still a key infrastructure for large payments and settlements. In 2024/25, the number of transactions through RTGS increased by 4 percent, while the transaction volume increased by 94.4 percent.
Likewise, the number of transactions through the electronic cheque clearing system increased by 5.1 percent and the transaction amount by 6.6 percent. However, with the rapid expansion of digital financial services, the use of cheque and ECC systems is gradually declining.
