Moderate rainfall likely in flood-affected areas after afternoon: Department

Meteorologist at the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Rojan Lamichhane, said that there is a possibility of moderate rainfall in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and surrounding areas affected by the Bhotekoshi floods after this afternoon.

According to the Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall in the last 12 hours was recorded at 60.2 millimeters at the Meteorological Measurement Center at Nosyampati in Sindhupalchowk. Many places in Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces received moderate rain while light to moderate rainfall occurred at some places of Koshi, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.TAG_OPEN_div_32

The Department has stated that it will be generally cloudy throughout the country today. Moderate rain and snowfall is likely to occur in some places of the hilly region and at many places of the hilly region÷. According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, there is the possibility of moderate rain with thunder and lightning at some places of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim provinces, and at a few ÷places of Madhes, Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places of mountainous and hilly regions of Bagmati Province and Gandaki Province, Koshi Province and Lumbini, Karnali Province and Sudurpaschim Province. The weather will be generally cloudy throughout the country tonight as well.

Moderate rain and snowfall with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at some places of the mountainous and hilly region while moderate rain with thunder and lightning is possible at few places of the Tarai. Heavy rain is likely to occur at one or two places of the mountainous region of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces tonight.

Challenge in Rescue: Authority

Chief Executive Officer of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), Dr Dharma Raj Upreti said flooding in the tunnel has posed more challenges in search and rescue operations in the flood-hit areas of Bhotekoshi.TAG_OPEN_div_22

According to him, due to the overnight rains, the water pumps have also been submerged after the tunnel was filled with water. He said that the security personnel are removing the pumps and pumping water. “The search has been started since morning. The security personnel are working to remove the water pumps after the overnight rain covered them,” he said.TAG_OPEN_div_20

TAG_OPEN_div_18 The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said that more problems may arise in the affected areas as there is a possibility of rain for three more days. He said that necessary precaution has been taken as the rain may increase the challenges in search, rescue and other management works.
