Foreign students not allowed to take their families and children with them in Australia

Kathmandu. Australia is going to tighten the visa system for the families of foreign students. Foreign students will not be able to take their spouses, partners or children to Australia while studying.

Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke unveiled the new immigration policy at the National Press Club on Thursday.

The government aims to reduce net overseas migration to 225,000 per annum by 2028.

Currently, international students studying in Australia can take their family members as ‘dependents’ under certain conditions. The spouse and partner of the student can also work in Australia.

Students can take their dependent children to Australia under the age of 18. Now this system will be removed.

Home Affairs Minister Burke has previously cited the lack of student accommodation as a major challenge to international education.

Australia has been criticised for increasing immigration and pressure on housing, infrastructure and social services.

This policy of the government will also affect Nepali students. Many Nepalis go to Australia for studies.
