Rs 100 billion to rebuild damaged infrastructure after Bhotekoshi disaster

{{TAG_OPEN_div_29} Kathmandu. Minister for Infrastructure Development Sunil Lamsal has said that about one billion budget will be needed for the reconstruction of damaged structures after the Bhotekoshi disaster, infrastructure management and risk mitigation in the future.

Speaking at a meeting of the Infrastructure Development Committee under the House of Representatives at Singha Durbar today, Minister Lamsal said that the amount would be needed for the reconstruction of structures damaged by the current disaster and for planning for the future.TAG_OPEN_div_27

“The government has already started works through an emergency tender process for the immediate maintenance of the roads and bridges damaged after the disaster and for the restoration of transport links. The rehabilitation work has been expedited due to the help of geotechnical experts and the active participation of the Department of Roads in Krishnabhir and other places which have a complex geographical situation,” he said, adding that although the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers had asked for details of the reconstruction cost by September 22, the necessary details have been prepared before the deadline and sent to the Disaster Authority. ”

Minister Lamsal said that the disaster authority has presented a demand of Rs 90 billion for the reconstruction of roads and bridges, construction of two alternative routes, landslide management across the country and management of equipment required for the future.TAG_OPEN_div_23

Stating that the total requirement of buildings, drinking water, urban development and other infrastructures has been estimated to be around TAG_OPEN_div_21 one trillion, he clarified that the rehabilitation works would not be halted due to budget crunch as coordination was underway with the Ministry of Finance for financial resource management.

} “In order to continue the work without stopping, the budget has been cut from other projects for the time being,” Minister Lamsal said, “Currently, the road has been brought into operation temporarily by clearing the landslide. Permanent roads are not constructed in the old, risky areas damaged by floods and landslides.” ”

He said that a new road would be constructed from a safe place as per the ‘Build Back Better’ concept after preparing a detailed project report (DPR) on the fast track and reviewing the structure. Minister Lamsal said that the government would move ahead with the concept of ‘new urban development’ for the affected people as it would be difficult to rehabilitate the settlements in the old format in the flood-affected areas.TAG_OPEN_div_17

“Now we will go for the concept of building a new city. There is no plan to return the damage to the place like after the earthquake,” Minister Lamsal said. He said that the government is preparing to move forward by purchasing the necessary land with a plan to provide necessary infrastructure and services including industries, hospitals, and schools in the new city. Minister Lamsal clarified that the Bhotekoshi floods have taught a lesson to the local government to be capable with the necessary resources, means and infrastructure to deal with the disaster.
