Banana farmers don’t get fair price due to increase in production

Chitwan. With the increase in banana production, the farmers of Chitwan are in trouble due to not getting proper price.

The price of bananas has reduced by half, they have rotted in the fields without being sold, farmers are worried about the spoilage. The import of bananas has been stopped since last year. With the stoppage of imports, farmers had increased production.

Banana is cultivated on 23,000 bighas of land across the country. Two thousand saplings can be planted on one bigha of land. One plant yields 100 to 200 kosha of bananas. Nepal is self-sufficient in bananas. After the import of bananas stopped, farmers started cultivating three thousand bighas more. Pant said that bananas should be exported next year.TAG_OPEN_div_36

The production of bananas has increased to nine lakh metric tons. The price of banana is likely to increase by Dashain, Tihar and Chhath. The price is expected to increase after February. Banana is cultivated on 1,850 hectares in the super zone area of Chitwan. This is 15 percent of the total area of Nepal.TAG_OPEN_div_32

Ghananath Mahato, president of the Banana Producers Association, Chitwan, said that there is a problem in not taking the produce of the farmers and selling it at a cheaper price. Consumers are still forced to buy G9 bananas at more than Rs 100 per doze.TAG_OPEN_div_30

The possibility of spoilage in the field has increased due to the lack of sale of bananas. Due to the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli floods, the price of bananas has decreased due to the failure to send bananas for sale in the big markets including the capital.

Shankar Subedi, a farmer of Ratnanagar Municipality-12 in eastern Chitwan, said that the price has come down as he could not reach other places due to floods. Subedi had cultivated bananas in 64 bighas of land. He said that from this year, he will be planting banana varieties that will give production throughout the year to make the country self-reliant.TAG_OPEN_div_26

He said that if the price of bananas produced does not fall below the cost price, the farmers of Nepal can easily become self-sufficient in bananas. According to the statistics of the federation, a farmer has planted bananas up to 100 bighas of land in Nepal. This decision came into effect from December 6. Encouraged by this, the farmers have increased banana cultivation. In Nepal, banana is being cultivated of Malbhog, G-Nine and Sugar Champa variety.
