Kathmandu. The government has prioritized the management of temporary shelters for the people affected by the Rasuwa floods.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration have stated that works to this effect have been expedited.

For this, the ministry has said that work is being done in coordination with the affected local levels. The committee formed under the coordination of the secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development includes four directors general of various departments and the heads of municipalities of all the affected areas. They are providing the committee with the details of the needs of their areas.

Earlier, the government had decided to provide Rs 15,000 per month to a family of four if they wanted to find a room and Rs 2,000 per person if they had more than four members.

For those who do not have safe land anywhere else, the government is managing the land on its own and is preparing to arrange ‘modular houses’ there. The Ministry of Infrastructure Development has said that the work of collecting its details is going on.

Similarly, the Ministry of Land has expedited the identification of land while the Ministry of Infrastructure Development has intensified homework related to the arrangement of houses.

According to the government’s preliminary survey, 60 per cent of the households in the flood-affected areas have opted to live in a rented room. The number of households who want to have a house on their own land is 20 per cent and 20 per cent who do not have a safe land.

Similarly, the government has also started work for the permanent settlement of the flood-affected people. The initial concept of the government is to rehabilitate them by building a city with all facilities in a safe place.
