PM Shah proposes ‘Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism’ between Nepal, India and China

Kathmandu. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has proposed the establishment of a ‘Himalayan Climate Resilience Mechanism’ under the leadership of Nepal, India and China.

Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) here today, he said the Hindu Kush Himalaya region is linked to water, ecosystem, agriculture and livelihood of nearly two billion people, adding that the Himalayas are integral parts of the earth’s life system.TAG_OPEN_div_19

The proposed mechanism will be used to exchange satellite data and expertise, monitor vulnerable glacial lakes, strengthen joint early warning system and coordinate cross-border assistance during disasters.TAG_OPEN_div_17

Prime Minister Shah stressed on the need of making the Himalayas a laboratory for international cooperation rather than the border of fragmented information. He said that Nepal was playing a global role more than its ecological contribution and that about half of Nepal’s land area has been rehabilitated.TAG_OPEN_div_15

The Prime Minister said that the development of hydropower is moving forward to meet the need of clean energy, the use of electric vehicles is increasing and the climate adaptation is being strengthened at the local level. Prime Minister Shah also expressed the commitment that Nepal will make more preparations to deal with the growing disaster.TAG_OPEN_div_13

Prime Minister Shah said that the flood disaster that occurred in the Himalayan region of Nepal a month ago was not only a tragedy limited to Nepal but a warning to the world.TAG_OPEN_div_11
