Kathmandu. Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged the US to oppose ‘Taiwan independence’ and handle the Taiwan issue carefully during his talks with US President Donald Trump.

He also stressed the need to expand cooperation between China and the US in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

During the talks at the White House, Xi said that the two countries should make cooperation the main basis, keep competition within reasonable limits, manage differences and pursue stable relations. He said that by implementing the agreement reached in May this year, the area of cooperation should be expanded and disputes should be reduced to stabilize economic and trade relations.

Stating that the two countries have strong capabilities in the field of AI, Xi said that there is a need for continuous dialogue about its risks and benefits and joint efforts to prevent misuse. He stressed that AI should be under human control and developed in a human-centric manner.

On Taiwan, Xi said China’s stance on national unification and safeguarding territorial integrity was clear and the US should stick to its policy of opposing “Taiwan independence”. He said that this would lay the foundation for China-US strategic cooperation and the development of bilateral relations.

US President Trump described Xi’s visit as excellent and said that economic and trade dialogue should continue. He said that new achievements have been made from the recent discussions between the two countries, and he said that talks should continue to improve the trade agreement. The two leaders also agreed to expand dialogue and cooperation in AI.

During the talks, views were exchanged on international and regional issues, including the Middle East, the Ukraine crisis and the situation on the Korean Peninsula. It was also agreed to support each other in hosting the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting and the G-20 Summit in 2026.

This is the second meeting between the two leaders in less than six months during Xi’s three-day visit to the US.
