Snowfall hits Khumbu area, rescue of seven foreign tourists

Solukhumbu. Due to heavy snowfall in the Khumbu region of Solukhumbu, the movement of tourists to the high mountain region has been affected. Snowfall has started in the upper part of Khumbu after incessant rains.
According to Chief District Officer Kaman Singh Thapa Magar, more than TAG_OPEN_div_37 half a meter of snow has accumulated in the high reaches of Khumbu. Tourists who have gone to the upper region for trekking and mountaineering have been stopped from moving further towards the risky places due to snowfall.
} He said, “There is heavy snowfall in the upper areas. It has been reported that more than half a meter of snow has accumulated in some places. Keeping the safety of tourists in priority, efforts are being made to keep them in safe places by coordinating with the local level, locals and police. ”
Seven foreign tourists, who were stranded in the Imja Che (Island Peak) area of the Sagarmatha region due to heavy snowfall, have been rescued. According to Chief District Officer Thapa Magar, the tourists of Chinese origin are European nationals. They were brought to a safe place with the help of local people’s representatives and locals after their movement in the upper reaches became difficult due to snowfall.TAG_OPEN_div_33
Imja Chhe or Island Peak is an important mountaineering destination in the Khumbu region of Sagarmatha National Park. According to the Nepal Tourism Board, the trekking route from Dingboche to Chukung via Imja Khola connects to the main trekking route of the Everest Base Camp area. Island Peak is known by the local name Imja Chhe. This area is located at an altitude of about 6,165 meters above sea level and is a mountaineering destination in the Khumbu Mountain region. Coordination has been made with the local level and security agencies to prevent more tourists and trekkers from going to the upper region due to adverse weather. According to the administration, there are more than one thousand two hundred tourists in the Sagarmatha region at present. The administration has said that they are continuously taking information about their condition through the local level, police and other concerned bodies.
According to Laxman Adhikari, ward chairman of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality-4, the rural municipality has issued a notice to tourists and trekkers to take precaution due to adverse weather. “We have given priority to the safety of tourists as the weather is unfavourable. According to Sagarmatha National Park, the Khumbu region is a high-risk geographical area in the Himalayan ecosystem. The upper part of the park consists of glaciers, mountains and deep valleys. The Imja Khola system is also an important watershed area of the park. The Nepal Tourism Board has described the Sagarmatha region as an area with rapid changes in weather due to its high mountainous geography. In the upper part of the mountain, the temperature is low and trekking and mountaineering can be affected due to rain and snowfall, so one has to travel according to the weather conditions.TAG_OPEN_div_25
The Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality has also urged tourists, trekkers, mountaineers, guides and porters to travel only after understanding the weather conditions and not to travel unnecessarily in risky conditions. According to Chief District Officer Thapa Magar, coordination has been made between the local level, police, administration and locals for the rescue of tourists and trekkers in the high altitude areas if the snowfall increases. “The local people’s representatives are active during the disaster. We are ready for necessary rescue and security management in coordination with the District Disaster Management Committee,” he said. The administration has urged the people not to travel unnecessarily in the high altitude areas until the weather returns to normal and to follow the notices issued by the local administration and local government.TAG_OPEN_div_21
