Myagdi. The Beni-Jomsom-Korala road along the Kaligandaki Corridor, which was blocked due to floods and landslides following the recent monsoon-induced disaster, has been repaired at different places.

The road was blocked due to floods and landslides at 55 different places along the road. The flood in the Kaligandaki River following the rain of September 22 has eroded and swept away the roads at 10 places. Chief of the Beni-Jomsom-Korala Road Project, Tejaswi Sharma, said that the preliminary repair work has been completed by Tuesday except the approach road and bridge at Pokhrebagar of Annapurna Rural Municipality of Myagdi and Kunauta in Raghuganga Rural Municipality-2.

} “The road from Maldhunga to Kunauta, Korala to Pokharebagar road bridge has been repaired to allow the operation of heavy vehicles,” he said, adding that the landslide clearance works have been completed at Ratopani, Dhirchyang, Bhirkate, Mahabhir, Tiplang and Begkhola between Pokharebagar and Kunauta. ”

The flood swept away 250 meters of the road and the approach road to the bridge at Pokhrebagar making it impossible for pedestrians in Kunauta. In Kunauta, a gabion wall is being constructed by deploying tippers with four excavators and by mobilizing workers and equipment.

Sharma said that equipment and laborers have been mobilized with the aim of operating vehicles by next Monday. In the initial phase, there was a shortage of fuel to construct a new road as an alternative to the eroded road on the premises of the Rahughat Hydropower Project at Tilkenichaur of Raghuganga Rural Municipality-3.TAG_OPEN_div_25

The work of opening the roadway in front of the power house of Rahughat has been completed. The project said that there was no problem as the fuel was managed with the help of Nepal Army, volunteers and drones.

Narendra TAG_OPEN_div_21 Subedi, chief of the Federal Road Supervision Project (FRP), Pokhara, said that the Department of Roads and contractors have mobilized 15 excavators, 12 tippers and 15 loaders to expedite the road construction.

“The Department of Roads and the construction company are working in parallel at all places to open the blocked road,” he said. This year’s disaster has caused a big loss to the project so far. The Department of Roads has estimated that three billion will be required for the reconstruction of the road. The Korala border point is important for trade with China as the Rasuwa and Tatopani border points are closed. Chief District Officer of Myagdi, Ganesh Gaire, said that the government is working with high priority to bring the road connecting the border point into operation soon.

The time to send apples to Mustang has started. The time to bring down sheep and mountain goats for Dashain and Tihar is near. There is pressure to bring the Beni-Jomsom road into operation as soon as the tourist season has started.
