Three killed in Houthi attack on Saudi airport

Kathmandu. Three people have been killed and 36 injured in an attack by Houthi rebels at two international airports in Saudi Arabia. After the incident, the Saudi-led coalition has intensified its retaliation against the Houthis.

According to the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority, the attacks targeted Abha International Airport and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Tuesday and Wednesday. An Egyptian and an Algerian were killed in Abha, and a Sudanese national was killed in Riyadh.TAG_OPEN_div_30

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sari claimed that Riyadh’s airport had been targeted with “precision” strikes and that air traffic had been affected. The Houthis also claimed to have fired drones and missiles at Abha Airport and King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushaith.

TAG_OPEN_div_26 The Saudi-led coalition said it had hit 82 military targets, including missile launch facilities, command centers, communications systems and gathering places, in response to the Houthi offensive. The coalition also said it destroyed the ballistic missile launch platform used in the attack.

The Houthis have claimed another attack on Riyadh’s airport and warned airlines not to use Saudi airspace. They also claimed to have attacked a military supply convoy near the airport in Aden. A plane from Cairo diverted to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, after the missile fell, state-run Sabah news agency reported.

Meanwhile, Yemen’s internationally recognized government has announced that it has launched a major counteroffensive against the Houthis. Government forces have claimed to have repelled Houthi fighters from strategic positions on the Red Sea coast and the port city of Mocha. The Houthis have said they remain under their control. At least TAG_OPEN_div_20 62 fighters were killed in clashes in western Yemen on Wednesday, according to military sources on both sides. Of them, 37 were Houthi fighters. Five civilians were wounded when a Houthi missile struck the government-held city of Taiz, Sabah said.

Saudi Arabia has led the international coalition against the Houthis since 2015. Yemen’s protracted war has deepened the humanitarian crisis.
