. U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday exempting Russia from sanctions and tariffs aimed at revenue from its energy sector. The U.S. policy has changed to increase pressure on Russia’s energy trade since the Graham Act’s decision not to use the powers granted to it by the Graham Act, which became law last month.

The Lindsey Graham Act, named after the deceased U.S. Senator, gave President Trump the authority to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on major buyers of Russian oil and gas. In the executive order, he decided not to apply the sanctions and fees mentioned in Section 4 of the Act.

The law targeted Russia’s energy and defense sectors, Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials. Moscow’s so-called “shadow ship fleet” of tankers used to evade Western sanctions was also targeted.

The decision comes after Trump’s controversial deal with Putin to allow Russian diesel exports in exchange for U.S. sanctions relief.TAG_OPEN_div_10

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Trump’s decision as a “poor decision”. Relations between Kyiv and Washington have also deteriorated after the Ukrainian military resumed attacks on Russian oil facilities.TAG_OPEN_div_8
