US President Donald Trump has suspended the implementation of economic sanctions and tariffs on Russia for 60 days.
Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said the decision was made to study its impact on the global economy. However, US lawmakers and Ukraine have criticized it as it will benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin.TAG_OPEN_div_20
TAG_OPEN_div_18 According to Rubio, conflicts, including the war on Iran and attacks by the Houthi group in Yemen, have increased global oil and diesel prices. He said that the impact of sanctions and tariffs should be analyzed as such events are affecting the overall economy.
The law, passed by the U.S. Congress last month, gave the president the power to impose sanctions on Russian officials, the wealthy and financial institutions and take action against major buyers of Russian oil and gas. The aim was to prevent Russia from raising funds for its war against Ukraine. But on Friday, two days before the law went into effect, Trump waived through an executive order.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis called the decision “irresponsible” and said the Iran problem should be solved rather than helping Putin lower energy prices. Another Republican senator, Ted Cruz, also called it a mistake.TAG_OPEN_div_15
Rubio argued that since Russian diesel reaches the world market in some form, it would be practical for the U.S. to get a share of it. Diesel is an important fuel in the road construction, agriculture and construction sectors. Rising fuel prices due to the Iran war have become a major concern of American voters ahead of next month’s midterm elections.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concern that the United States could lift more sanctions on Russia, saying Trump’s decision had rewarded Putin.TAG_OPEN_div_11
