Myagdi. Beni Bazaar, the district headquarters of Myagdi, is facing a shortage of drinking water. The water supply in the market has decreased after the water pipeline was damaged due to floods and landslides in the second week of September.

Ramesh Giri, president of Beni Drinking Water and Sanitation Consumers’ Association, said that although more than 20 liters of water is required per second in Beni Bazaar, water is currently supplied at the rate of eight liters per second. The organization has been distributing drinking water to about 25,000 people living in 1,200 households of Ward No. 2, 7 and 8 of Beni Municipality.TAG_OPEN_div_30

The 14-kilometer-long pipeline that brings water from the sources of Dandakharka and Rithakharka in Annapurna Rural Municipality-8 to Beni has been damaged due to floods and landslides. A new pipeline has been expanded for about three kilometers in Dallepipal-Kalipul-Beni Ring Road-Darwang Bus Park area by changing the route of the pipeline after landslides started occurring at Khoriya and Kharani of Beni.TAG_OPEN_div_28

“We are distributing water in a rotational system by bringing three liters of water per second from the source of Kopre, three .4 liters from the alternative Amreni source and four liters from Rahupare. However, we are preparing to supply water from the sources of Rithakharka and Dandakharka as the alternative sources have started drying up with the onset of the dry season,” said Giri, adding, “The work of reconstructing the Rahupare-Galeshwor section of the pipeline and expanding the new pipeline in Beni Bazaar area is underway.” ”

The pipeline to bring water from the sources of Dandakharka and Rithakharka, which supply 22 to 25 liters of water per second, has been closed for a month. Residents of Red Cross Road in Beni have started bringing water from private sources and consuming it as the demand is not being met.TAG_OPEN_div_24

Dinesh GC, a local, said that they had to bring water from private sources as the water distributed through the rotational system did not reach them. The lack of drinking water has affected the market residents, students, professionals and businessmen. Earlier, Beni Municipality, Myagdi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bouddha Youth Club and other organizations had distributed water in tankers and drums to the market.TAG_OPEN_div_22

Chairman Giri said that preparations are underway to bring water from Rahupare to Beni before the Tihar festival by expanding a temporary pipeline along the Beni-Jomsom road as other options are not immediately available. He said that efforts are also being made to supply water from the Rithakharka source as a short-term option and to operate alternative sources to draw water from the Myagdi River bank at Mangalaghat through lift technology.TAG_OPEN_div_20

According to Giri, the estimated cost of drinking water in Beni would be Rs 147 million for the immediate project and Rs 700 million for the long-term plan.TAG_OPEN_div_18
