Demand to declare Tarai as dry zone and bring relief programs

Kathmandu. Lawmakers have drawn the attention of the government to the lack of rainfall in some districts of Madhes till the last week of June.

In today’s meeting of the House of Representatives, they drew the attention of the government through parliament to declare the Tarai as a drought-hit area and carry out relief programmes.

Krishna Kumar Shrestha of The Communist Party of Nepal (Unified) Socialist Party said there was acute shortage of drinking water in Bara, Parsa and other districts.

Independent lawmaker Amresh Kumar Singh said there was a shortage of drinking water and irrigation from Birgunj to Janakpur due to drought.

Ram Krishna Yadav of the Nepali Congress said that there was drought in various districts of the Tarai, the people there did not get drinking water and the farmers were not able to sow. He expressed concern over the drying up of chapakals and wells in the Terai region.

Gyan Bahadur Shahi of Rastriya Prajatantra Party drew the attention of the government through parliament saying the locals had protested against the scrapping of the Jumla-based Drinking Water and Sewerage Management Office.

Nepal Communist Party (Maoist Centre)’s Tsering Lhamu Lama also said that the drinking water office should not be abolished from Jumla. He drew the attention of the agencies involved in the dhauligad mega drinking water project of Jumla to complete it at the earliest.

Nepali Congress’s Kantika Sejuwal also said that the government has done injustice to the people of Karnali by abolishing the Drinking Water and Sewerage Management Office.

Sita Kumari Rana of The Nepali Congress said that the mid-western university’s teaching has been disrupted due to partial teachers’ protest and sit-in. He stressed the need for implementation of the study report prepared for the management of part-time professors of the university.

Rekha Sharma of CPN (Maoist Centre) objected to the government’s decision to complicate the health insurance programme and remove some hospitals from the list of first service centres.

Durga Rai of the same party alleged that financial transactions took place in the appointment of Kaski District Land Revenue Chief and Land Commission Chief.

Sumana Shrestha of Rastriya Swatantra Party reiterated her party’s old demand for the formation of a high-level inquiry committee or commission into the visit visa case. After he spoke, the lawmakers of the party left the meeting room.
