Washington. Alaska Airlines has requested that all its flights be suspended until further notice, in line with a recommendation issued by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
“Information technology barriers have been experienced and are affecting our flight operations,” the airline told AFP on Sunday local time. The airline has requested a temporary halt of flights to Alaska and Horizon Air “until the problem is resolved”.
The FAA has shown that all destinations have been affected by the ground stop of the company’s aircraft. AFP did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the problem.
Alaska Airlines has asked passengers to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport and apologized for the interruption.
“We apologise to our guests (passengers) for this inconvenience,” the statement said. “There will be residual effects on our operation throughout the evening.
This statement, also posted on X, attracted reactions from disappointed passengers. “It’s cruel. We’ve been staying at the airport for two hours,” X user Caleb Hemlich replied.
The incident comes more than a year after the door plug section of the Boeing 737 MAX 9 exploded during an Alaska Airlines flight between Portland, Oregon and California’s Ontario in January last year.
Most Boeing 737-9 aircraft operated by U.S. airlines were grounded by the FAA after surviving the pressure-reduction environment experienced during the deep ascent on the plane with 171 passengers and six crew members on Friday.
U.S. investigators said last month that Boeing’s inability to adequately train manufacturing staff was the main reason for the Alaska Airlines plane crash.
Alaska Air Group has 325 aircraft including 238 Boeing 737 and 87 Embraer 175 aircraft.
