Durga Paksha begins: Ghatasthapana being performed at every house today

Kathmandu. KATHMANDU — Bada Dashain, the biggest Hindu festival that begins every year from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada, has begun from today.

This festival is celebrated for 15 days till Ashwin Shukla Purnima. On the first day of Bada Dashain, Ghatasthapana is performed in every house with the installation of lamps, kalash and Ganesha. The puja begins with the invocation of Goddess Durga, the presiding deity of Shakti, according to the Vedic rituals.

This morning, after completing the daily rituals, sand or soil is brought from the nearby river or clean place, placed in a puja room smeared with cow dung or in the Dashain house, and barley is planted on it. This act is also known as keeping the jamra. Since barley sprouts are the favorite thing of Goddess Durga, today barley is planted and offered to Goddess Durga and on the day of Bijaya Dashami, along with Tika Prasad, the yellow Jamara symbolizing prosperity is also accepted.

Religious scholar and member of Nepal Calendar Determination Development Committee, Prof Dr Devmani Bhattarai, said that there is no scriptural method of planting grains other than barley in Jamara. According to the family tradition, some have also planted other grains with barley. Jamara is also used as an Ayurvedic medicine.

Ghatasthapana at 9:13 a.m.

On this day, Durga is worshiped on the same pot and on the same pot is worshipped. On the day of Bijaya Dashami, the offerings of Goddess Durga are received after anointing with the water of the full urn.

According to the committee, the auspicious time for Ghatasthapana is 9:13 am today. Committee Chair Prof Shambhu Prasad Dhakal said the committee took the decision as per the scriptural belief that Ghatasthapana should be performed on the day of sunrise.

Goddess Durga, Mahakali, Mahalaxmi and Mahasaraswati, are worshipped during Navratri. Mahakali is worshipped as the symbol of power, Mahalakshmi as the symbol of wealth and prosperity and Mahasaraswati as the symbol of knowledge and wisdom.

On the occasion of Durga Paksha, the nine forms of Durga are used to kill demons like Chand, Munda, Shumbha, Nishumbha and Raktabij, which symbolize demonic tendencies. The 15 days from Ashwin Shukla Pratipada to Purnima are also known as Durga Paksha.

Worship is held on the first day for Goddess Shailputri, Brahmacharini Pooja on the second day, Chandraghanta on the third, Kushmanda Pooja on the fourth day, Skandmata Pooja on the fifth day, Katyayani Pooja on the sixth day, Kalratri Pooja on the seventh day, Mahagauri on the eighth day and Siddhidatri Pooja on the ninth day. These nine forms of Durga are called Navadurga.

There is a scriptural rule that all human beings worship Goddess Durga as they protect human beings from demonic and demonic tendencies. On the seventh day of Bada Dashain, Phulpati is brought as per the religious rituals. On the days of Maha Ashtami and Mahanawami, the worshippers perform special worship with offerings at Dashain Ghar, Kot and Shakti Peeth.

During Navratri, Durga Saptashati (Chandi), Shrimad Devi Bhagwat and other goddesses are also recited. On this occasion, devotees devotees throng the temples and shrines including Guheshwori, Maitidevi, Naxal Bhagwati, Shova Bhagwati, Nala Bhagwati, and Palanchok Bhagwati.

There is a religious belief that Lakshmi gives wealth to the people who stay awake on this day. On this day, the Jamara kept in Ghatasthapana is immersed in a pure place on the day of Kojagrat Purnima.

Special Puja at Hanuman Dhoka’s Dashain Ghar

According to the tradition, the worship of Goddess Durga begins from today by keeping ‘jamara’ in the house of Hanumandhoka Durbar in Kathmandu. According to Kajiman Pyakurel, chief of the Hanumandhoka Durbar Care Office, the Ghatasthapana ceremony will be performed this morning as per the Vedic rituals.

After Ghatasthapana, daily sacrifices are offered and worshiped methodically. On the day of Mahanawami, 54 goats and 54 buffaloes are sacrificed at the Kot of Hanuman Dhoka.

People who are out of their homes for employment, studies and other work celebrate the great festival by returning home on the occasion of Dashain and staying with their families. Therefore, Bada Dashain is also considered as a festival of family reunion. Most of the educational institutions have been giving a holiday on the occasion of Dashain from today.
