Kathmandu. On the first day of Navratri, people worship Shailputri, the first goddess of the nine goddesses.

Goddess Shailputri is invoked and worshiped after the rituals of the puja room or Dashain Ghar of the house. Shailputri is one of the nine idols of Goddess Durga. It is mentioned in the Puranas like Kavach, Markandeya and other Puranas that Goddess Kavach, Markandeya is Shailputri, the daughter of Himalaya. Goddess Shailputri is worshiped as the lord of all.

It is also mentioned in various Puranas that Shailputri Devi was pleased with the penance and prayers of the Himalayas and was born as the daughter of him. On this day, the devotees throng the temples and shrines at the temples of the goddesses across the country including in the Kathmandu Valley.
