‘Genji’ protest: Loss of Rs 100 million in Banepa Municipality

Banepa Municipality has been assessed to have suffered a loss of around Rs 100 million due to vandalism and arson during the ‘Genji’ demonstration that took place in the third week of August. According to the technical assessment conducted by the municipal office, the loss was equal to the amount.

The three-storied main administrative building, planning section and technical section of the municipality were completely damaged during the demonstration. According to the assessment of the municipality, the meeting hall on the first floor of the three-storey administrative building, the office of the administrative officer, the women, children and senior citizens section, administration, cooperative and community development, revenue, kind, registration and toilets, and important records and documents inside the office of the branch have been completely destroyed. A total of Rs 54,254,487 was damaged in the technical evaluation of the main building constructed in 2043 BS.

Similarly, the office of the mayor, deputy mayor, chief administrative officer, secret room, secretariat room, judicial committee’s bench room, law, education, accounts section and two toilets on the second floor were completely destroyed in the fire. Similarly, the fire destroyed the internal audit, commodity warehouse room and archives of the accounts section on the third floor.

All the branches and office rooms of the building where the project and technical sections are located have been completely destroyed in the fire. All the branches inside the building, where the security guards and the breastfeeding room were located, were also destroyed. Mini-trucks 4.9 million, three tractors 4.5 million, a tipper Rs 2.59 million, a motorcycle Rs 142,900, two cars Rs 2.3 million, a jeep Rs 508,268 and five bicycles lost Rs 50,000 were damaged. According to the report, 44 desktop computer sets, 16 laptops, 14 tablets, 21 mobiles, 53 printers, three digital cameras, one video camera and three televisions worth Rs 82.22 million 49 thousand 531 were damaged.

Similarly, 149 types of spent goods were burnt and 14.60 lakh were damaged. Mayor Shanti Ratna Shakya said they have written to the District Police Office to identify the culprits involved in vandalism, arson and looting the municipality office. Currently, the service is provided by managing the municipal office at Banepa-10.

As many as 18 government and private structures were damaged in Kavre during the demonstration. The municipality buildings, police offices and houses of people’s representatives were vandalized and torched and looted in particular. Four people have lost their lives in Kathmandu during the ‘Jenji’ movement.
