Kathmandu. The signatories of the Nepali Congress (NC) special general convention have demanded that the party general convention be held immediately. They made this demand at a press conference held in Kathmandu on Sunday morning.
Leader Gururaj Ghimire, who led the signature campaign by organizing a press conference in Kathmandu today, said that he has already filed an application at the party central office demanding a special general convention as per Article 17 (2) of the party statute. He said that he was closely observing the ongoing central committee meeting.
“At a time when the national politics is moving ahead at a rapid pace, there is no room to delay the holding of the party general convention, to distract and to choose the party’s leadership and policies,” reads the statement.
“The intention of the working committee seems to be not to hold the regular general convention by December 12 and to extend its term as the central committee meeting that began on October 12 seems uncertain to extend its term. Such behavior and attitude of the present central committee is objectionable. ’
Here are the 5-point notices they made to the central committee meeting:
1. As the delegates of the General Convention have the sovereign right to demand a special general convention as per Article 17 (2) of the Party Statute, no one has the liberty to undermine or deflect it by showing any reason.
2. We have the background of many incidents and accidents in Nepalese politics as a benchmark for the failure of the Central Working Committee elected from the party’s 14th General Convention. Therefore, this working committee has lost the moral ground to lead the party by extending its term.
3. Realizing the national need to go for the upcoming elections by selecting a new policy and leadership through the party general convention before the House of Representatives election announced by the Government of Nepal on March 4, the demand has been made to hold a special general convention. We don’t have a better option. Therefore, we would like to remind again that it is imperative to be serious towards this demand and move towards its implementation.
4. There is a history of the newly elected Central Working Committee conducting the elections in the past elections with a new mandate within the party through the general convention. Therefore, it is imperative to hold a formal general convention and elect a new working committee within the coming November.
5. It is objectionable that some members have expressed their views in the ongoing meeting of the Central Working Committee against the main spirit, spirit and jurisdiction of the party statute. We feel that the central working committee is trying to run away from the main responsibility of the party due to such statements of the central members. Therefore, we urge the government to move towards the implementation of the demand of the special general convention by accepting it as a legitimate, timely and natural necessity.
