Manila. The death toll from Typhoon Kalmegi that hit the Philippines since Sunday has risen to 66 and 26 more people are missing, the Philippine Civil Defense Office (OCD) said Wednesday.
OCD Deputy Administrator Rafaelito Alejandro told media that 49 people had died in the worst-hit Cebu province. At least 10 people were injured and more than 706,000 people were affected, he said.
As of Wednesday, the Philippine Meteorological Department said it was moving west-northwest at 25 kilometers per hour in El Nido, Palawan, the epicenter of Kalmegi, with maximum winds of 120 kilometers per hour and winds of 165 kilometers per hour.
Kalmegi is the 20th typhoon to hit the Philippine archipelago this year, according to the department. The Philippines, which is located in the Pacific Cyclone Zone, faces an average of 20 cyclones each year.
