Manila. The death toll from two powerful typhoons in the Philippines has risen to 259 and displaced hundreds of thousands of people, officials said Wednesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Sunday that at least 27 people were killed and two others are still missing before making landfall as it made landfall in north-central Luzon.

Typhoon Kalmegi caused flooding and landslides in the central Philippines on November 4, killing 232 people, missing 112 and injuring more than 500.

Most of the deaths were reported in Cebu province, which was hit hard by the 6.9-magnitude earthquake on Sept. 30. According to the agency, the cyclone has displaced millions of residents and destroyed key infrastructure, including homes, farms and roads and bridges.

Phang-Wong was the 21st tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, surpassing the country’s annual average of 20 typhoons.
