Bardaghat Susta east self-sufficient in milk

Nawalparasi. Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) produced 50,013 metric tonnes of milk in the last fiscal year.

Dr Sharmila Kumal, chief of Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Specialist Centre, Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), said that 50,013 metric tonnes of milk was produced in the district in the fiscal year 2081/82 BS. Based on the population of the district, milk is produced more than the requirement and exported outside the district. Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) has been self-sufficient for the last three years based on the data of milk produced, said Chief Kumal.

“On the basis of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) fixed 91 litres of milk per person in a year for development-oriented countries, the district has produced 132 litres of milk per person,” he said, adding, “On the basis of milk produced in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East) in the fiscal year 2081/82, the total population of nawalparasi will get 132 liters of milk equivalent to one person.” ’

According to the data, 50,013 metric tonnes of milk was produced in the district in the last fiscal year. Of this, cow’s milk is 32,353 metric tons and buffalo milk is 17,660 metric tons. The remaining milk consumed in the district is sent to Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan for sale, said Chief Kumal. Although the district is self-sufficient in milk production, milk production has decreased in the last fiscal year compared to the production ratio of the last three years.

“Milk production increased from 61,664 metric tonnes in fy 2078/79 to 62,446 metric tonnes in FY 2079/80. However, in the last fiscal year 2080/81, the production of milk was reduced to 55,170 metric tons.

In the last fiscal year, milk production has decreased to 50,013 metric tonnes,” he said. According to the statistics of the district, the number of cattle farms and cows and buffaloes is also decreasing every year. In the fiscal year 2079/80, the number of cows was 41,489, the number of buffaloes was 48,854, while in the fiscal year 2080/81, the number of cows was 37,198 and the number of buffaloes was 43,950.

In the last fiscal year, the number of cows was 32,897 while the number of buffaloes was 38,896. In this way, the number of cows is decreasing at the rate of 4,000 per year and the number of buffaloes is decreasing at the rate of 5,000 in the district.
