Kathmandu. Gai Jatra festival is being celebrated in different parts of the country including Kathmandu Valley today. Gai Jatra, the traditional cultural festival, is celebrated every year for eight days from August Krishna Pratipada to Ashtami by organizing various programs.

Gai Jatra is celebrated in different cities of the country, but it is celebrated specially in The Kathmandu Valley. On this day, cows or people are circumambulated in their respective areas in the memory of relatives who died within a year and they are donated milk, fruits, bread, ragi, curd as well as grains and money by the devotees.

It is believed that this festival started on the basis of King Pratap Malla’s instruction to his queen, who is devastated by the grief of his son, to show that the world should suffer such grief. ।
