Landslide blocks mid-hill highway, pilgrims stranded in Halesi for Bolbam

Khotang. The Jayaram-Halesi road section along the Mid-Hill Highway has been obstructed due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. The Jayaram-Halesi road has been completely blocked due to landslide at Chismitar of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality-3 this morning.

Vehicular traffic and passengers going to Kathmandu and Tarai÷ have been stranded on the road due to the road blockade. Pilgrims coming to Halesi for ‘Bolbam’ have also been stranded in the middle of the road due to the blockade of The Jairam-Halesi road.

Acting Chief Police Inspector at the District Police Office, Khotang, Sushant Mishra, said that the vehicles coming from there have been stopped at Jairam and those going through Diktel at Durchim as it takes time to clear the landslide. According to locals, the landslide has blocked the Jairam-Halesi road, causing problems to the devotees who come to attend the Bolbam Mela held at Halesi, the most tri-religious place.

Kamal Giri, spokesperson of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality and ward chair of Ward No. 7 Mahadevsthan, said the landslide at Chasmitar has created problems as the number of pilgrims travelling to Halesi is also high as it is the last Monday of the month of July. “Many pilgrims have been stranded on the ‘B’ road due to a massive landslide on the Jairam-Halesi road section. All mechanisms have been mobilized to rescue them,” he said. Work is underway to remove the landslide so that it can be restored by evening. ’

According to police, the landslide occurred at Around 8:10 am today due to incessant rain for the past few days. According to locals, the Damli-Dikuwa road has also been blocked due to the landslide at Chasmitar.

Mayor Bimala Rai informed that the excavators of Halesi Tuwachung Municipality and Mid-Hill Highway have been used to clear the obstructed road. “The landslide is huge. Efforts are being made to remove stones, soil and trees lying on the road,” he said. However, efforts are on. Travelers should travel only with information. ’

The Bolbam Fair is held for months in Halesi, the confluence of Hindus, Buddhists and Kirats. People from all districts of Nepal, including India, China and Bhutan, come to participate in the fair.
