Kathmandu. President Ram Chandra Poudel has said that all parties must fulfill the commitments made in the Paris Agreement.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of a conference of parliamentarians from the Hindu Kush Himalayan region here today, he urged the government to abide by the agreement to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius in particular.
Speaking at a conference of Hindu Kush-Himalayan parliamentarians held in Nepal for the first time, he said the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region was warming at a higher rate than the global average as global temperatures were rising. He noted that in recent decades, glaciers in the region have melted rapidly, leading to an increase in climate-related disasters such as floods and landslides.
“Climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution are no longer limited to scientific reports, they have become the harsh realities of our lives. Therefore, this conference is a historic opportunity to chart a roadmap for our common and sustainable future,” poudel said, adding, “This is an opportunity to show a firm commitment to the future of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region- its geography, mountains, forests, rivers and environment.” ’
He expressed concern that the water flowing from the mountains, oxygen provided by the forests and fertile land were the basis for sustaining the lives of more than two billion people of the world. “Our region is rich in biodiversity. “But biodiversity loss is affecting food security, hurting cultural heritage, increasing the risk of species extinction, which has a serious impact on the economy as a whole,” he said. ’
He thanked the member states for their remarkable initiatives to tackle climate change, control air pollution and conserve biodiversity in the face of these challenges. President Poudel said that our region has set an example that exemplary steps can be taken even in the opposite situation shown to the world.
Cooperation in hydropower generation and use, promotion of solar energy, participation in community forest conservation and development of climate disaster forecasting system are some of the important initiatives taken by Nepal, he said. These are important steps for regional cooperation for climate adaptation and mitigation.
Stating that expansion of national parks and protected areas, modernization of wildlife surveillance system, and participation of local communities are remarkable works for biodiversity conservation, he also lauded the steps related to improving public transport, promoting electric vehicles, and controlling industrial emissions to control air pollution. did.
He hoped to regularize and institutionalize such parliamentary dialogues and develop them as the basis for long-term cooperation. Lawmakers from various countries of the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region, high-ranking representatives of the government, climate sector experts and others are attending the conference. ।
