Kathmandu. World Lake Day is being celebrated in different countries of the world today with the aim of preserving, restoring and managing the ecosystems sustainably.

At the call of the United Nations, the people associated with the world organization have agreed to celebrate this day from this year. Last year, the General Assembly passed a resolution to celebrate World Lake Day.

The main objective of this day is to educate and protect the organizations associated with the UNITED NATIONS system, other international regional and sub-regional organizations, civil society, private sector, environment and educational activists about the importance of lakes.

According to the United Nations, there are more than 117 million lakes on earth. They account for four percent of the world’s land mass. The relevance of celebrating this day has increased in the context of environmental damage due to pollution and methane emissions as well as depletion of fresh water sources.

Water supply to humans, an important source of production for agriculture and industry, lakes have given life to countless species of fish, plants and wildlife to maintain biodiversity. Conservation of lake beds is considered important in the context of increasing global warming as lakes are drying up and ice melting is also increasing.
