Bhojpur. The production of ‘Bhojpure khukuri’ has been facing crisis in the district as the interest of the new generation towards the traditional khukuri making profession is declining. Entrepreneurs say that they have not been able to meet the demand due to the lack of skilled artisans.

Due to lack of generational transfer and lack of protection, the Kaligadh profession is in crisis. According to traders, the demand for khukuri in Bhojpur is in the local market, outside the district as well as in the international market.

Harka Bahadur Bishwakarma, a local Kaligad, said that the shortage of skilled artisans has contributed to the decline in production in the district. According to him, it is difficult to meet the demand due to the decrease in khukuri production due to the loss of interest of the new generation in the Kaligad profession.

“Lately, there has been demand for Bhojpure khukuri from home and abroad”, he said, adding, “The production has decreased due to lack of skilled human resources in the rural areas”. It is difficult to meet the demand of the market. There is a lack of generational change in this profession. ’

According to him, there is high demand for khukuri mainly in Bhojpure, Sirupate, Chitlang and Kothimoda markets. Dinesh Gajmer, an entrepreneur, said that the price of khukuris in the local town ranges from Rs 1,000 to Rs 20,000. He said that although there is a demand for two to four hundred khukuris from outside the district, it will be difficult to meet the demand if there is much demand.

He said that although there were many artisans in the past years, the number of people doing this work in the commercial sector has gradually decreased in recent years. He said that this profession is in crisis due to the lack of hard work and raw materials required for doing business.

There is also a shortage of manpower to make agricultural tools and equipment required for farming after the operation of khukuri factories in the rural areas has been closed due to the wave of foreign exports.
