Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose higher tariffs on Canadian goods if a trade deal with China is implemented.
This has further illustrated the current differences between Canada and the United States. In a statement posted on social media, Trump said it would not be appropriate for Canada to be used as a conduit for Chinese goods to enter the United States. “We are deeply concerned about Canada’s current actions,” he said.
Canada recently agreed to reduce import and export tariffs on electric vehicles and agricultural products. Initially, there was a positive response to this, but in recent times there has been a disagreement from the US side.
The U.S. Office of the President has not yet released any details on when or in what format the tariffs will apply. However, it has been made clear that there is concern and concern about Canada’s decision.
Canada’s Trade Minister Dominique LeBlanc said Canada and China had resolved some “key trade issues” but that there was no effort for a full free trade agreement.
Canada and the United States have been at loggerheads over a number of international and diplomatic issues in recent years. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s remarks at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland have further revealed the differences between the two leaders.
However, analysts say Canada is somewhat protected from import tariffs because of existing trade deals between Canada, the U.S. and Mexico.
