Kathmandu. U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that his administration will seek $1 billion in damages from Harvard University. He said there are no plans to collaborate with Harvard in the future.
Writing on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said he is currently seeking $1 billion in damages and does not want to work with Harvard University any further.
Trump administration officials have accused several prestigious colleges, including Harvard, of promoting so-called “woke” ideology. They say that these institutions failed to provide adequate security to Jewish students during the pro-Palestinian protests. A legal complaint has been filed in this regard and a demand has been put forward for excessive payment.
Critics have described the move as a pressure campaign by the administration on liberal universities.
Columbia University, another Ivy League institution, agreed to pay $200 million to the Trump administration last summer. Under the agreement, the university pledged to abide by rules that do not take into account the basis of caste in the admission and recruitment process.
But the New York Times reported on Monday that his administration had rejected Harvard’s demand for a $200 million payment after lengthy negotiations.
In September, Trump told reporters that talks with Harvard were close to reaching a $500 million deal. The potential deal also included a proposal to open trade schools.
But in a post on Monday evening, Trump said Harvard’s concept of job training had been rejected because it was “complex and inadequate”. According to him, the administration had come to the conclusion that the proposal would not be successful.
President Trump has accused Harvard of “serious and heinous illegality” and said it was trying to get away with more than $500 million in cash settlements. He, however, gave a clear explanation of what laws Harvard had violated.
Meanwhile, the University of Pennsylvania, another Ivy League institution, also announced last year that it would ban transgender women from participating in women’s sports under pressure from the Trump administration.
