Association calls for strict regulation of lead content in cosmetics including toothpaste

. KATHMANDU: Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has demanded strict regulation of daily use toothpaste and beauty products due to high levels of lead.

Issuing a press release today, Dr Sanjeev Tiwari, general secretary of the association, said that the amount of lead was found in toothpaste, oral and dental hygiene materials and various other beauty products that are harmful to human health.TAG_OPEN_div_11

According to a recent study report made public by the Centre for Public Health and Environment Promotion (CEFED), 31 percent of the samples collected from shops in different cities of the country were found to contain lead above the accepted international standard.TAG_OPEN_div_9 According to a press release issued by the association, lead was found in 45 percent of the samples of daily use toothpaste and in some products available in the market for children. The Association has demanded the government to ensure strict incorporation of such products that have a serious impact on the health of the general public including children.

The World Health Organization and other health organizations and related bodies have proved that lead is extremely harmful to human health.TAG_OPEN_div_7  “There is a scientifically proven evidence that exposure to lead in children can lead to intellectual development, learning difficulties, behavioral problems and serious negative effects on vision, hearing and nervous systems in the long term,” reads the statement.
