Kathmandu. India’s Adani Enterprises has revealed that it is cooperating with an investigation into possible US sanctions violations following a media report on allegations that it was importing Iranian oil products.
According to the company, after the US authorities expressed interest in the matter, they are cooperating by providing the necessary details. The Wall Street Journal reported in June that US prosecutors were investigating whether Adani Group-owned entities had imported Iranian oil.
The report said US officials were monitoring the origins of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at the Mundra port, the tankers used to transport it, and various details of the fuel transport.
Adani Enterprises said in a filing on the stock exchanges on Tuesday that it had received a “request for information” last week from the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the sanctions enforcement agency under the US Treasury Department.
The company said the request came only after it voluntarily contacted OFAC following a media report last year. The Adani Group is a large port-to-power conglomerate run by billionaire businessman Gautam Adani.
On the day the Wall Street Journal reported on June 2, the company “halted all LPG imports out of an effort of due diligence and cooperation,” according to the filing.
According to the filing, OFAC has informed the company that it is conducting a civil investigation into some transactions made through US financial institutions. The transaction is being viewed on suspicion that they “may be directly or indirectly involved in the interests of Iran or individuals under US sanctions against Iran”.
Adani Enterprises did not disclose the exact details of what OFAC has asked for. However, it clarified that the communication with the agency “did not include any findings of deviation or non-compliance”.
The company said it was “fully cooperating with OFAC and will provide all information requested”.
The Adani Group has previously denied “knowingly engaging in illegal trade or evading any ban on Iranian-origin LPG”.
According to the Adani Group, the media report said the shipments were “carried out through third-party logistics partners as part of a routine commercial transaction” and were backed by documents showing Sohar, Oman, as the main port.
