Kathmandu. BEIJING (AP) — China on Tuesday announced strict export monitoring and control measures against 40 Japanese companies amid heightened diplomatic tensions over Taiwan.
Beijing has placed 20 companies directly on export control lists, banning Chinese exporters from dealing in dual-use goods with them, and added another 2 TAG_OPEN_div_22 0 companies to a strict watch list.
According to China’TAG_OPEN_div_20 s Ministry of Commerce, the 20 companies will no longer be able to sell “dual-use” materials that can be used for both civilian and military purposes. “All ongoing activities must be stopped immediately,” the ministry said in a statement. Foreign entities or individuals are also prohibited from providing such goods manufactured in China to those listed companies.
The banned companies include subsidiaries of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Fujitsu, which produces shipbuilding, aircraft engines and marine machinery.TAG_OPEN_div_18 Chinese exporters who want to do business with watchlisted companies will have to apply for individual licenses and submit a written commitment that the Japanese military will not use them, along with a risk assessment report. The list includes Subaru Corporation, Mitsubishi Materials Corporation and the Institute of Science Tokyo.
The Chinese side said the measures were “completely legitimate, reasonable and lawful” measures, expressing concern over Japan’s remilitarisation and potential nuclear ambitions.TAG_OPEN_div_16 “These decisions target only a limited number of institutions and will not affect normal economic and trade exchanges,” the ministry said. “Honest, law-abiding Japanese institutions have no reason to worry,” the statement said.
The decision is seen as a continuation of the bilateral sensitivities that have developed since Japanese Prime Minister Sane Takeichi spoke last November about Taiwan’s potential security situation.TAG_OPEN_div_14 Beijing describes Taiwan as an issue related to its own territory and has been clear about its position on the issue. China has generally reacted cautiously and sensitively to external rhetoric about Taiwan’s status.
Meanwhile, Takaichi’s party won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections held earlier this month, which is expected to reinforce a more conservative edge in Japan’s security, immigration and strategic policies.TAG_OPEN_div_12 China’s latest move has also been analysed as a sign that it could have an impact on regional balance of power and supply chains.
