‘Grey list’ is not only a challenge but also an opportunity for reform: Governor Poudel

Kathmandu. Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Bishwanath Poudel has said that being in the grey list of the Nepal Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is a significant opportunity to reform the money laundering mechanism.

Speaking at the International Conference on Financial Cooperation on Money Laundering and Terrorism organized by the NRB’s Department of Money Laundering and Supervision on Wednesday, he said the grey list should be taken as an opportunity for reforms and consolidation.TAG_OPEN_div_12 He also pointed out the need to make the internal mechanism transparent, robust and in line with international standards.

Governor Poudel said that the tendency to commit financial crimes using modern technology was on the rise and the supervision mechanism should be made resourceful to control it.TAG_OPEN_div_10 He also made it clear that preparation is necessary rather than reacting only when problems arise.

He stressed that all the stakeholders should be aware as the tendency to commit financial misappropriation and crime by using legal loopholes has increased.TAG_OPEN_div_8 He said that due to such activities, the country will have to spend resources on health and education and there is a risk that social and class discrimination will increase.
