Still. Dr Swarnim Wagle is a well-known name in the public policy and economy discourse of Nepal for a long time.
He is known as an economist, policy expert and planning expert. Wagle entered active politics in recent years and was elected for a second term from Tanahun constituency-1.
Dr Wagle garnered 38,040 votes. He had won the by-election from the same constituency with 34,911 votes.
Wagle, who was born in Gorkha district, says he grew up in a normal environment. He was interested in studies since childhood and went abroad for higher education. He completed his PhD in Economics.
In course of his studies, he carried out special research on development economics, public policy and economic reforms. This study led him to participate in international policy debates.
After his higher education, Dr. Wagle worked in various international organizations. In particular, he worked on development, poverty reduction and economic policies in the programmes associated with the United Nations.
After returning home, he took charge as the Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission. During his stay there, he made significant contributions to the country’s long-term development plans, economic policy reforms and good governance.
After working in the policy sector for long, Dr Wagle felt the need of a political leadership not only to formulate policies but also to implement them. With this thought, he entered politics through the RSP. His entry into politics is seen by many as a “transition from technical leadership to political leadership”.
While contesting from Tanahun constituency-1, he listed development, good governance, employment and economic reform as his main agenda. While directly interacting with the voters, he talked about new thinking and result-oriented politics.
Dr Wagle is widely regarded as a ‘leader with policy capabilities’ in Nepali politics. His experience in the economy and development policy is expected to add a different voice to the parliament.
