. Bhawani Prasad Regmi, 52, of Chamunda Bindrasaini municipality in Dailekh district was found carrying a load in Nainital, the tourist city of Uttarakhand, India, on Wednesday. Regmi, who has been earning his livelihood by working as a daily wage labourer in Nainital for the past three decades, hoped that the government formed after the recently concluded House of Representatives election would uplift the working class.
} “Nainital is a tourist destination for the well-to-do people and people from many places come here to escape the heat,” said Regmi. I hope that the changes that have taken place for good governance in the country after the Jenji movement will create employment opportunities in the country. He said that he used to get a wage of seven hundred rupees in the evening by carrying heavy loads throughout the day.
Regmi is just one example. Many Nepali workers like him have been working as daily wage earners in Nainital for a long time. They are hoping that the next government will provide employment in the country. “We are happy with the news that youths will run the country and hope that the younger generation will get an environment to work within the country,” said Bam Bahadur Thakuri, 65, of Dailekh. Thakuri, who has been working in Nainital for the past twenty years, said that he is managing his household expenses with his income. “It has been twenty years since I started visiting Nainital”, he said, adding, “More than one thousand Nepalis are working as daily wage labourers in the Nainital area alone”. ’
Similarly, 75-year-old Padam Bahadur Bista of Naraharinath Rural Municipality of Kalikot carries a load of fruits and vegetables to Nainital almost every day.TAG_OPEN_div_21 Bista came to Nainital for the first time in 2052 BS to work as a daily wage labourer. He is currently working as a labourer in Nainital with his youngest son.
TAG_OPEN_div_19″I get social security allowance in Nepal too,” Bista said, “But the allowance alone is not enough to run the household.” I am earning around one thousand a day here by carrying loads of fruits. He said that leaving home in old age and going abroad for wages was not his desire but compulsion. Heavy vehicles are not used to transport materials in Talli and Mallital areas of Nainital. Although the materials are transported to the designated places, most of the work of transporting construction materials and food grains in the area around the lake is done by Nepali workers.
