Kathmandu. Dr. Swarnim Wagle, who holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from the London School of Economics, is one of the renowned economists of Nepal.

Born in Bungkot of Gorkha district, Dr Wagle is a prominent economist and vice-president of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP). He secured the second position in the entrance examination of 2042 BS from Budhanilkantha School.

Dr. Wagle earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the London School of Economics, a master’s degree in international development from Harvard University and a PhD in economics from the Australian National University.

Before joining politics in a full-time manner, Dr. Wagle had served in the international and multilateral economic forums for more than two decades. He has served as Senior Economist at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., and Chief Economic Adviser for Asia and the Pacific at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Headquarters in New York.

He has also made important contributions to policy and planning. He was a member of the National Planning Commission and served as the vice-chairman from 2017 to 2018.

Dr Wagle, who had played a role at the ideological and policy level in the Nepali Congress, left the party in Chaitra 2079 BS and joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party. Currently, he is the vice-president of Rastriya Samajwadi Party and a member of the House of Representatives elected from Tanahun constituency-1. Dr Wagle was elected to the House of Representatives on March 4 garnering 38,040 votes.

Dr Wagle, who was established as an intellectual leader who conducts policy-level debates based on statistics and logic, has been prominently raising the issues of economic reforms, good governance and youth self-employment in the parliament.

Born in Gorkha, Wagle grew up in a normal family environment. He has been interested in studies since childhood and is known as a studious and logical leader.

He conducted special research on development economics, public policy and economic reforms. Due to this experience, he has been participating in international level policy debates.

After completing his higher education, he worked in various international organizations. Dr. Wagle made significant contributions in the areas of development, poverty reduction and economic policy especially through the programs associated with the United Nations.

Preparations are underway to start the construction process of the multi-purpose Budhigandaki Hydropower Project as per the concept forwarded by him while serving as the Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission. The government has already decided to forward the project by utilizing internal resources. In addition, he worked on the country’s long-term development plan, economic policy reforms and good governance.

Dr. Wagle, who believes that political change should be linked to economic development and prosperity and expansion of middle class, is established as an established economist and development strategist of contemporary Nepal. “Politics is not just a mere imagination and dream, but people should feel the change and make qualitative changes for it,” he said.

During the election, Dr Wagle made development, good governance, employment generation and economic reform the major agenda. Dr Wagle, who puts forth his issues clearly and believes that ideology should be superior to criticism in politics, raised the issues of new thinking and result-oriented politics during the direct dialogue with the voters.

Dr. Wagle is known as a leader with policy capacity and knowledge of economic issues in Nepali politics. The role he played in the parliament last time as the federal parliament is also memorable.

He has published articles and opinions on economics in various international journals. Dr. Wagle’s analysis focuses on contemporary and problem-solving, especially due to problem identification, presentation of facts and data.

In particular, his unique experience in economy and development policy is expected to fulfill the dream of building a prosperous Nepal.
