Middle East Tensions Escalate: Drone Attack Attempt Again on US Base

Kathmandu. Syria’s Deputy Defense Minister Sipan Hamo said on Sunday that Syrian security forces had controlled a drone attack from Iraq on a US military base in the country.

This morning, four drones targeted the Qasrak base in Syria from Iraq. But the Syrian army destroyed all the drones and there were no reports of damage or injuries. Sipan Hamo pointed to responsibility for Iraq and called on it to stop such attacks.

The attack followed a day’s drone attack on the al-Tanf base. The al-Tanf base is located in eastern Syria and was previously a US military base. This week, another base in northeastern Syria was also hit by a missile attack from Iraq. Iraqi officials confirmed the involvement of local armed groups in the attack and arrested four people.

Iraq has been indirectly dragged into this war. The war began on February 28, 2026, with US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran, and has since spread throughout the Middle East. Pro-Iraqi groups have claimed responsibility for the attacks, targeting regional U.S. objectives.

US forces in Syria have reduced their presence in recent months. US forces have partially withdrawn from al-Tanf and Shadadi bases. U.S. troops have also begun to move in from the Kasarak base. Meanwhile, regional tensions are escalating and the U.S.-IRAN-Syria-Iraq relations are complex.

Experts see the incident as a sign of a growing security challenge in the Middle East. The drone capabilities and cross-border attacks of pro-PRIRAN groups operating in Iraq pose a challenge to US security strategy and regional stability.
