Kathmandu. The U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu has issued a new travel advisory for travelers to Nepal. The embassy has urged Nepal to adopt extra precaution during the visit, keeping it in ‘Level 2’.
According to a notice issued by the Embassy on March 31, 2026, it has been asked to remain alert due to the civil turmoil. The embassy said the nationwide protests that began in September 2025 have been halted and the security situation has stabilized, but the main city is still facing local unrest.
The notice warned that the demonstrations could turn violent at any time. Therefore, US citizens have been asked to stay away from large crowds and follow the instructions of local authorities. Nepal is also at risk of earthquake, flood and landslide. Heavy rainfall especially during the monsoon period from June to September could lead to road disruptions.
According to the Embassy, although the hospitals in Kathmandu are comparatively better in terms of health services, they are overcrowded and people have to pay money before treatment. It has been suggested to make travel insurance with ‘medical evacuation’ mandatory as one may have to go to another country for serious treatment.
The embassy has urged the citizens who are in Nepal to participate in the ‘Smart Traveller Enrollment Program’ and get information through local media.
