Madhes’ economic growth slows to 1.31 per cent

Janakpur. The economic growth rate is expected to be weak in the current fiscal year as the contribution of paddy, fishery and forest sector has been drastically reduced due to the negative impact on the Madhes agriculture sector.

Data Officer Nar TAG_OPEN_div_8 Bahadur Kunwar said that the country’s economic growth rate would be the lowest in the last three years as paddy and fish production were adversely affected due to insufficient rainfall this time. In the fiscal year 2080/81, Madhes had grown by 3.18 percent and in the fiscal year 2081/82, the economic growth was 2.72 percent. According to the office, the economic growth rate has been declining due to the negative impact on agricultural production in Madhes for the past two years.

The contribution of Madhes Province to the national GDP for the fiscal year 2082/83 is estimated to be 13.1 percent.TAG_OPEN_div_6 Raj Kishor Singh, a member of the Policy and Planning Commission of the province, said that this problem has surfaced due to the decrease in the contribution of agriculture in Madhes Province. He said that agriculture, education, health, infrastructure and social development would be given priority in the upcoming budget.
