Kathmandu. As many as 1,186 organizations operating in the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) have gone missing in contact. The cooperatives are now said to be out of contact.
According to KMC Cooperatives Department, only 726 cooperatives have been in contact with the cooperatives and submit their annual reports regularly.
Department chief Dhruba Kumar Kafle said that process has been initiated to take action against cooperatives not in such contact as per the law. He said that the department has given the responsibility of regulating the ward women’s network.
“We have sent a letter to the Women Network to play the role of cooperation and coordination to maintain the principles of cooperatives, business promotion and good governance,” he said. The work details related to cooperatives have been added to the network with the objective of resolving the problems through collective interest, coordination and mediation,” said Kafle.
Coordinators and members of the Ward Women’s Network, representatives of cooperatives from cooperatives, borrowers themselves in case of borrowers and savers themselves will be present for mediation and discussion.
In order to resolve the problem, a single or joint application will be taken to return the savings amount of the savers belonging to the cooperatives under the jurisdiction of the metropolis and the concerned ward. Cooperatives or borrowers will be contacted online or through correspondence. For the purpose of mediation, the name of the organization, address, details related to the amount claimed, contact number and records will be taken. It is believed that this will facilitate the collection of loans from the borrowers who have not repaid the loan along with discussion and reconciliation.
Suggestions will also be given to the ward chairperson and the department to ban public basic services to the borrowers if they do not show any interest in repaying the loan even after the notice is sent from the ward.
The Department of Cooperatives is responsible for informing about the financial condition of cooperatives within the ward, repayment of savings, loan recovery and problems related to member interest, maintaining good governance, transparency and accountability in cooperatives and coordinating to resolve the problems related to cooperatives.
