Health volunteers happy with hike in transportation cost

. Sharada Devi Bista of Bedkot Municipality-8 in Kanchanpur has been working as a health volunteer since 1998. He used to get Rs 75 for transportation when he started the service.

Bista said that he was happy with the provision of 50 per cent increase in the amount of Rs 4 TAG_OPEN_div_28 00 per cent for the meeting. “Even in the past, we have not come to this service because of money. Our main goal is to serve and this decision has encouraged us,” he said.
Another female health volunteer, Saraswati Devi Karki, said that the increase in transportation cost has encouraged them to work.TAG_OPEN_div_26 “In the absence of bicycles, it costs more to reach the place where I am called, even if I have to ride an auto. Although the remuneration is not much, the respect for women health volunteers in the society is different, and this decision will further contribute to that,” he said.
The health volunteers receive Rs 10,TAG_OPEN_div_24 000 annually as uniform allowance from the state, Rs 12,000 from the Sudurpaschim provincial government and Rs 15,000 from Bedkot municipality.
“The government not only increased the transportation cost, but also increased the salary and allowances for thousands of volunteers like us who have been serving the village. This would have provided some relief in the current situation of inflation,” said Karki, adding, “Many people remember us and seek advice in the village when there are patients, new mothers and general health problems. ”
} There are seven health volunteers in Bedkot Municipality-8 where they are working in various works from the health unit to the ward. Health volunteer Sarita Bista said that she has been providing service since 2060 BS and still has been playing the role of many people in primary health care as well as various public awareness programs.
} “Although the work of health volunteers has decreased after the operation of basic health units in the ward, there is still public confidence in primary health care and public awareness works”, he said, adding that people still come to the village for health materials such as Jeevan Jal, zinc, condoms and others. ”
