Kathmandu. The 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress was held in November 2078. In the general convention, the then Defence Minister Minendra Rijal was fielded for the post of General Secretary of the Nepali Congress.

The voters of the party did not give him enough votes in the election. He was defeated. He resigned from the post of Defense Minister on December 29 immediately after his defeat. He submitted his resignation to his own party Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, saying that the party representatives did not like him at that time.

He was defeated by a huge margin for the post of general secretary. “I have decided to resign from the post of Defense Minister in view of the clear results of the general secretary post I contested for the fourteenth general convention of the Nepali Congress,” he said in a social media post at the time. The general convention of the ruling Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is underway in Chitwan. The results of the central committee members have already been announced. Minister for Youth, Labor and Employment Ramji Yadav was elected as the central member of the party.
