What is in the roadmap to increase electricity consumption and manage exports?

. The government has forwarded the process with the objective of broader development by listing the energy sector as the major pillar of economic prosperity.

According to a press conference organized on the occasion of 100 days of the formation of the incumbent government, the government has prepared the ‘Energy Consumption Growth and Export Strategy, 2083’.TAG_OPEN_div_62

The 100 agendas related to governance reforms approved by the cabinet meeting on March 26 had mentioned that the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation would be asked to prepare a strategy for energy export within a month and to sell the electricity export during peak season at high price.TAG_OPEN_div_60

According to the same action plan, Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Biraj Bhakta Shrestha has given a ministerial decision on April 23 and a mandate has been given to the Ministry under the coordination of Joint Secretary Sandeep Kumar Dev to include clear blueprints for increasing internal consumption and exporting electricity.TAG_OPEN_div_58

In order to address the issue included in point 74 (a) of the governmental reform, the committee led by Joint Secretary Dev had given importance to the energy sector as the main driver of economic transformation of the country.TAG_OPEN_div_56

The main basis of the strategy is to significantly increase the domestic electricity consumption and replace LP gas from the kitchen, and to give priority to electric vehicles in the public and private sectors.TAG_OPEN_div_54 The electric system will replace the fossil fuels used in the industry.

} The electricity tariff will be made consumer-friendly and the distribution system will be transformed into a modern ‘smart grid’ as well as part of the reservoir-based project for security. The goal was to expand the national broadcasting system throughout the country.

The strategy has included the issue of increasing per capita electricity consumption and significantly increasing the total installed capacity. Currently, per capita consumption of electricity is equivalent to 450 kilowatt hours.

The target is to reach 1,500 kilowatt hours by 2035.TAG_OPEN_div_48 The aim is to replace cooking gas by consuming more and more electricity.

Policy and other arrangements will be made to increase the use of electric stoves and the construction of charging stations will be expedited to increase the use of electric vehicles across the country.

Similarly, the total installed capacity of the country is 28,TAG_OPEN_div_44 500 MW by 2035. Currently, the installed capacity of the country is 4,242 MW.

The government plans to increase the domestic consumption to about TAG_OPEN_div_42 13,500 MW. Similarly, Nepal will expand its presence in the bilateral and sub-regional market by developing 15,000 MW power export capacity to India and Bangladesh.

According to the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), 19,623 MWh of electricity is being exported to India and Bangladesh.TAG_OPEN_div_40

The Ministry TAG_OPEN_div_38 of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI) has said that the Energy Consumption Enhancement and Export Strategy, 2083 has been prepared to establish Nepal as a reliable supplier of clean energy. Towards energy generation, additional 138 MW capacity has been added. Similarly, 472 gigawatt hours of electricity has been exported.

During this period, an additional 2,948 hectares of irrigation facility has been expanded and 149 hectares of land has been reclaimed by constructing 37.5 kilometres embankment.TAG_OPEN_div_36

28,TAG_OPEN_div_34 000 electric stoves and 13,442 KW rooftop solar systems have been installed to promote clean energy in rural areas.

In line with the concept of national pride projects and the concept of ‘National Structured Project Pipeline’, the implementation of projects like Babai and Sunkoshi-Marin has been expedited and emphasis has been laid on infrastructure development.TAG_OPEN_div_32 Investment promotion and one-door service have been expanded.
